Lasik Eye Surgery FAQ:

If so, how long was it before you had to start wearing them?
It has been 8 years since my eye surgery, but I am starting to have a hard time reading. If I have to start wearing reading glasses does that mean my distant vision will start to get worse also?

I had to start wearing them about a month after. I also developed migrain headaches that I never had before the surgery.

Hi,
I had Lasik 15 yrs ago and still don’t need glasses. Re: reading glasses: I was told that Lasik cannot fix far-sightedness and therefore if one later needs reading glasses they’re stuck with them. However, the doctor also said that by the time I need them, they might have perfected the ability to also do this procedure. So far, my vision is SPECTACULAR.
…Best of luck re: your eyes (and the rest of you too) (!)

Yes, you may indeed need to wear reading glasses. Lasik can improve your distance vision, but if you need a reading prescription and a distance prescription, you may still need the magnification of reading glasses.

If you never wore reading glasses before, but your distance vision was weak, you may find that now that your distance is improved you reading is less sharp.

It’s very common, however, atleast you will likely not be needing bifocals for some time.

Wait until your eyes have fully healed and adjusted to the lasik surgery before getting an examination for reading glasses.

You may need them within months, it may be yeaars before you need them. An examination is the only way to be sure.

Optometrists are cheaper than opthamologists, usuall about 100$ cheaper, and perform just as thorough an exam.

The only difference between an Op. and an Opth. is that the optometrist can not perform surgery, he is not an M.D., he is an O.D.

your lasik surgen should have informed you that lasik surgery only corrects the problems you were having with your distance vision. Usually the around the age of 40 is when the average person will develop the need for reading glasses. the muscles that contract your cornea to, do what we in the optical field call, accomodate ( or focus ) loose their ability to do just that, focus. therefore cheaters (readers) are needed. in your case you should do just fine with a pair off the a walmart rack or dollar store rack… and you will only need them for reading. THIS IN NO WAY effects your distance vision and your distance vision will remain fine. :D hope this helps.
